Biography
Al Prather was born in 1939 in Lexington, Kentucky, and has spent his entire life in central Ky. He started hunting and fishing at age 13 with his older brother and dad, and was privileged to enjoy some of the best rabbit hunting with some of the best beagle hounds in the country. His dad, Floyd, Sr. had a strong background in foxhounds and quickly gained a reputation for raising some of the finest beagles. His brother, Floyd Jr., was 13 years older than Al, and cultivated his love for hunting, fishing, and sports, especially his beloved Kentucky Wildcats basketall team.Al, known as Possum from his Henry Clay High School baseball days, kept that nickname to this day, and had lots of fun with it while a member of the Lexington Fire Department from 1964 until 1975, and has been a self employed home improvement contractor since. He has been married happily for 60 years to his wife, Nedra, and they have 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. Christmas get togethers are a real blast.
Al has bass fished all over the south, and has hunted nearly every wild animal that lives in Kentucky, and has bow hunted in Utah and Colorado during earlier years. He started hunting coyotes 14 years ago, and has hunted nothing but coyotes and crows for the past 23 years. He used nothing but mouth calls for the first 5 years, and has used a combination of mouth calls and ecallers ever since, and gets a special kick out of using decoys and scents to fool and harvest many coyotes over 45 pounds. He credits a late friend, Clay Smith, a well known Kentucky trapper, for giving him his most useful tip for coyote hunting, "Learn to think like a coyote". He thinks of Gerry Blair as the greatest living predator hunter. His greatest joy is helping young hunters learn the game, especially his grandsons.
"Possum" has been referred to as "Possumal" and "Coyotepossum" on the various forums. Al Harral, www.varmintal.com, posted several stories and pictures of Al on his site, and Possumal started receiving many contacts from all over the United States. He will quickly tell you that no phase of hunting has captured his imagination and attention like the pursuit of Wylie Coyote.
